Why I’m studying Nutrition

More and more clients want expert advice on nutrition that can help them look good from the inside out.  That’s why beauty therapist Leyla Mustafa is training in nutritional therapy at CNM (College of Naturopathic Medicine).

Looking good is no longer perceived to be just about putting on makeup or having a facial.  Increasingly, my clients know that they need to do more to look good, whether by changing their diet, exercising more, or learning to relax.  They are realising that what we eat, and what we put on our skin has a powerful effect on the way we look and feel.

They want expert advice on nutrition that can help them look good. Gaining an in-depth and respected qualification in nutrition will enable me to provide that advice and open up new avenues in my career.

I’ve been a qualified beauty therapist for over 25 years, having worked in upmarket stores and as an in house beauty therapist at the fashion house Christian Dior.  My interest in nutrition developed over time. When I took a break to have children, I realised that I ought to know more about what they needed to eat to grow up healthily.

[Then, when I became unwell with digestive issues on and off for 2 years, medical check-ups and colonoscopies couldn’t confirm the root of my problem. When my doctor suggested that I should take antidepressants I felt that I should look for an alternative solution. Consulting a nutritionist was the best value for money that I had ever spent.   She worked with me to heal my gut and boost my immune system.  My horrible symptoms at last disappeared and I felt healthy and happy again.]

It was not until my father became very ill, however, that I really began to research into the powerful effects of nutrition and its role both in the causes and prevention of disease.  It kicked off a huge interest for me and I began to research into where I could study nutrition, particularly from a naturopathic point of view, where the root causes are addressed so that ill health doesn’t just become a repetitive cycle.  CNM, the College of Naturopathic Medicine, was my best option, especially as a working mum who could benefit from the flexibility of their course.

I have completed my Biomedicine course at CNM and I’m now in my first year of studying Naturopathic Nutrition.   I love being in a class of likeminded people, with people from diverse career backgrounds, all eager to learn.  In fact,  I love my studies so much that when I qualify as a nutritional therapist I’d like to do a second CNM diploma, in another natural therapy such as herbal medicine or acupuncture.

Clients aren’t always just after a facial or red vein removal, they are now interested in what it is they are putting into or on their bodies and they are always asking me for tips.  When I graduate, many of my beauty clients will also become my nutrition clients. Whether it’s about preventing premature ageing, keeping in shape or addressing low energy levels, combining nutrition with beauty is an absolutely natural fit and offers exciting opportunities for me and my clients.
