Why choose a spray tan treatment? Why is it a good service to complement a nail treatment?

Nowadays, clients like to go to one place to get multiple beauty treatments and services. For instance, get their nails done whilst their hair colour or highlights are developing. This is why many hair salons also offer facials, nail treatments, tanning, waxing, threading and eyelash perming or extensions amongst other things. Nowadays, Beauticians need to be multi skilled, and trained in many different beauty disciplines to offer their clients these services in one place and at the same time! Most people feel at their best when tanned. A nice glowing tan is associated with beauty, health and acts as a mood lifter. Spray tans have become a commodity and are widely available as a complementary service to other beauty treatments. It is fast, affordable, and safe and shows immediate results.

How can you find out what tanning solution suits what client, is there a general rule for applying the right shade?

We are all different. Our skins are all different – as are our tastes in terms of tanning.  The first thing is to understand the customer’s expectations in terms of the depth of the shade of the desired tan.  Tans can be customised from a very subtle natural glow to a full on “I just spent 2 weeks in the sun on holiday” result. So, first things first: understand what the customer wants and offer him or her best possible solution to achieve the desired results. We all tan differently. At United Beauty, with a large team of women with different skin shades, we all want products that recognise our individuality. This is why we have reformulated our Solglo range after having spent extensive time researching one of the best kept secret in the industry: What do we women want? Result: our new Solglo solution has been formulated to work with each skin type to develop a very natural, safe, personal looking tan.

What are the benefits of your tanning formula? Does it contain any unique ingredients that add benefits for the tan or to the natural skin?

Solglo benefits from years of experience on the tanning market and is an award winning formula. So we have started from something already very good to make it exceptional. New and improved Solglo is a streak-free natural-looking sunless tan which seamlessly blends into the skin for a flawless airbrush finish – minus the nasty tell-tale orange undertones. The complexion will be beautifully sun kissed with our nut-free (no nuts related discomfort), streak-free and even longer lasting than ever improved formulation…And no nasty after-smells associated with most tanning products on the market!

Lightly fragranced and enriched with vitamin E, the new Solglo formula keeps the skin feeling soft and supple whilst the addition of soothing, reparative and restorative aloe vera extracts makes it a real beauty treatment as well as a tanning solution. The longer-lasting formula means that top-ups are needed less frequently and that the tan retains a luxurious golden glow that keeps on giving. The 2 shades Sun Kissed & Sun Drenched are available in either 1 L or 5 L bottles to suit all needs.

Do you do a patch test on clients?

Although allergic reaction risks are minimal, and our formulas are very safe to use, we always advise to do a patch test prior to application to assess skin reaction to the product.  The active ingredient in all sunless tanning solutions is the same: Dihydroxyacetone or DHA. It has been extensively evaluated by the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) (who advise the European Commission on matter of product safety) and is regarded as safe for use up to concentration levels of 14% (SCCS/1347/10). All other ingredients in our formulation are perfectly safe for cosmetic use.

What is the process of a client having a spray tan? Prep, exfoliate, after care?

Exfoliating the skin before tanning (preferably the night before) is a must to get rid of dead skin cells and have an even-looking tan as a result. You can lightly apply moisturiser but no make-up prior to application of the spray tan. Wait for the tan to develop 6 to 8 hours before showering or bathing. Regular moisturising (especially with a moisturiser contain DHA) will greatly help to prolong the tan.

Why is training essential – what can you learn from a spray tan course?

As we always say here at United Beauty, the difference between a good beautician and a great beautician lies in 2 parameters: the products she uses – and her knowledge and experience about the products’ their features and benefits. An artist is only as good as her tools… and her technique! Products evolve all the time. Beauticians have to first learn about the products and the ways of applying them and then keep up to date with new product developments. We offer accredited training courses to ensure that Beauticians using our products are fully qualified and also refresher courses to make sure that customers always get the very best from us and from our accredited technicians. Would you go to your GP to get veneers? No, you wouldn’t… The same applies to beauty: each speciality requires comprehensive training so the customers only get the very best of all the services available.

What tips do you have for creating the perfect tan?

Ensure that the spray gun settings are set according to the manufacturer’s instructions and spray from a distance of about 12 to 14 inches. Begin spraying at the feet  (but do not spray the feet) and start working up the body – then place your client into the various positions required to ensure an even tan on face neck, torso legs and inner arms and thighs. Dab off any overspray with a soft absorbent mitten. Wait until the solution is dry before your client gets dressed.

What tools are handy when you are applying the tan?

We provide a complete range of accessories with our tanning systems: the pop up tent which is compact, lightweight and portable which allows you to tan with no mess, sticky feet pads to protect the soles and prevent staining under the feet and disposable underwear, hairnets and gloves.

What does the prep and aftercare involve?

Exfoliate the skin before tanning and moisturise once the tan is developed to ensure even application and even fading. Moisturizing body cream to keep the skin hydrated and keep the tan glowing, pre-care cream to apply on elbows, ankles, knee caps… to avoid product build up.

What aftercare tips should techs give to clients for when they leave their salon?

Nourish the skin and hydrate twice a day on mornings and evenings to maintain the glow and slow skin shedding. Baby oil or Bio oil are great products to keep the skin very hydrated and give the tan an extra glow. Use after tanning creams with DHA to prolong your tan even further.

What does the future hold for tanning?

Customisation and intelligent cosmetics are definitely the future for tanning. Products such as Solglo, able to react with each skin PH and to get a perfect result every time. The market is also moving towards more natural formulations and dual purposes products. For instance: tan and tone at the same time (firming tanning lotion), tan and shape (sliming tanning lotion)…People also want to have access to at-home products in the same range as their tanning products to look after it at home. They want it to last longer, develop faster, smell nice, not stain clothing or bed sheets, fade evenly and look like a natural tan.

What pricing guide would you suggest?

It all depends on the type of treatment the customer wants. Usually from £20-£25 for a spray tan is market price.

How long does a spray tan take to apply to the skin and how long does it last on the client?

For a full body and face tan, allow about 10 minute for product application. Total time including cream application and drying is usually 20 minutes

Why does this make a great add on service for techs?

Because it is an easy add on to existing services. The comprehensive training course is a half day and the rewards for a busy tech with an established client base are substantial. As seen earlier, it is a complement and an add-on sale to other treatments as explained below.

How do you clean your spray tan equipment?

Typically, very simply, with warm soapy water and a sponge and brush. Always take the equipment apart in order to clean it thoroughly. It prevents product build-up and machine clogging.

How can you market tanning in a salon?

Posters and ads in the salon as well as marketing materials are important to let the customer know that the service is available in their salons. Then, really it is by the Beauty Technician creating that personal connection with the customers and proactively talking about the treatment and offering it as an add on.

That is where training Beauty Technicians is so important so they can give the best possible advice and answer customers’ questions. Beauty Technicians sporting a nice tan themselves and showing that they use the product has a great impact on sales. Indeed, when a technician wears a certain gel polish colour, eyelash extension or a tan, it can result in a 40% increase on this colour/treatment that day. People are amenable to suggestions and seeing it on their Beauty Technician makes them want it.
